Mental Health Musts for Your Wedding Day

Your wedding is a special day, but it’s also one that promotes stress and anxiety for many couples. From societal pressures to financial worries to family drama, planning a wedding can be an overwhelming time. Add to that the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, and you could be feeling very nervous and stressed during what’s supposed to be the most amazing time of your life. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to take care of your mental health so wedding planning can be a lot more manageable and help prepare you for any bumps you might hit along the way. Below, some mental health musts for your wedding day.

Prioritize What’s Really Important

Your wedding should absolutely be the most memorable experience, but don’t lose sight of what’s truly important: the reason why you’re getting married in the first place. Your wedding day is a celebration of your marriage, and it’s your marriage that will last far longer. Keeping that in mind will help ground you, especially when things go awry with planning. Change the focus from executing the most perfect wedding day to setting up a strong relationship and future with your fiancé, and you won’t sweat the small stuff as much.

Make Time for Some R&R

Blocking out some time to relax and de-stress is just as important as scheduling cake tastings. It’s key to take time out of your packed calendar to do things that have nothing to do with the wedding. That can include treating yourself to a massage, having lunch with a friend, or enjoying a night by yourself doing whatever you want, like reading, Netflix-watching, or online shopping. Just make sure you’re including time for some rest and fun—whatever that looks like to you!

Sometimes asking for support might mean checking in with a mental health expert, especially if you’re having trouble coping and/or you have a history of depression and anxiety. It’s incredibly valuable to have a safe space where you can express and navigate your tough feelings with a professional. Additionally, a therapist can help build a navigation strategy for your mental health that’s just for you, so you know how to handle stress during your planning, on your wedding day, and even beyond.

Practice Gratitude

Practicing gratitude is known to help improve one’s outlook on life, helping to find clarity and calm even in the midst of a storm. Take the time each night to write down at least three things you’re grateful for—including yourself! Planning a wedding is no easy feat, and it’s always important to take the time to celebrate yourself and let yourself off the hook once in a while.
