With international travel being more complicated now than ever thanks to COVID-19 travel restrictions, more and more newlyweds are choosing to experience their honeymoons within the United States. Fortunately, there are many honeymoon-worthy destinations that don’t require a passport. The U.S. Virgin Islands—commonly referred to as USVI—have become a hotspot within the nation to celebrate recent nuptials, and for good reason! Learn more about this amazing location below to see if it’s the right spot for you to unwind after you tie the knot.
United States Virgin Islands Overview
This string of islands is located in the Caribbean Sea about 40 miles from Puerto Rico. They’re comprised of three islands: Saint Thomas, Saint John, and Saint Croix. You can easily travel to these islands; Saint Thomas and Saint Croix have their own airports and Saint John is easily accessible via ferry from Saint Thomas. As mentioned above, these islands don’t require U.S. citizens to present a passport upon arrival, and they’re completely open as of right now (although social distancing measures may be in effect from one place to the next). Each of these islands has their own unique feel, but they all boast relaxing vibes, beautiful beaches, and amazing scenery.
St. Thomas: Shopping and Resorts
St. Thomas is a beautiful island with a lot to offer. Commonly renowned as a great island for shopping, the capital city Charlotte Amalie has many designer stores. Charlotte Amalie typically receives many cruise ship visitors, but that is currently pared down due to a lack of cruises with COVID-19. Out of the three USVI islands, St. Thomas is the one with the most mainstream resorts to choose from. There is a Ritz-Carlton as well as a Marriott, among other resorts and hotels.
St. Thomas has absolutely gorgeous beaches that will take your breath away. Visit Magens Bay, Coki Point, or Sapphire Beach to fully relax as you bask in the island sun. The waters of the USVI are known for amazing snorkeling to observe sea life, and St. Thomas is no exception to this. The island has a lot of other things to do, such as visiting historic sites like the 99 Steps and hikes to sites like Drake’s Seat. Clearly, there’s no shortage of things to do in St. Thomas!
St. John: Island Vibes
St. John is a smaller island close to St. Thomas that’s accessible by ticketed ferries from Crown Bay or Red Hook in St. Thomas. These ferries run every hour or so and are quick and inexpensive. Stepping onto St. John is like being transported to a tropical oasis where you can enjoy genuine island vibes. The town of Cruz Bay is small, but it’s packed with local restaurants, beach bars, and boutiques. St. John is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, including world famous Trunk Bay. A large majority of the island is national parkland, leaving lots of opportunity for breathtaking hikes where you can observe nature at its finest. There are even wild donkeys all around the island that you may be lucky enough to run into on your travels!
There is a Westin resort on the island of St. John, but the rest of the lodging options are either boutique hotels, such as the romantic Gallows Point Resort right in Cruz Bay, or vacation rental options through sites like St. John Villa Rentals.
St. Croix: History and Famous Beaches
The final island of the USVI trio is St. Croix. This island has its own airport and scenery just as gorgeous as its two sister islands. Beaches such as Davis Bay Beach and Buck Island are famous on the island. The island has a great boardwalk, Christiansted Boardwalk, which features many different bars and restaurants with outdoor seating boasting beautiful views. St. Croix is rich in historical sites, which makes for fun adventures. For instance, visit Fort Christiansvaern to learn about the roots of the island.
There aren’t many resorts in St. Croix, but it’s all a part of the island’s charm to stay somewhere with a more boutique feel. The Tamarind Reef Resort is a great option for a honeymoon, as is the Buccaneer Resort. Finally, Chenay Bay Beach Resort has its own little cottages perfect for a romantic experience.
The USVI is an amazing place to celebrate your newfound marriage with sun, sand, and one-of-a-kind experiences you’ll never forget!
